Continued impact of poor Primera rainfall

Key Messages

  • Subsistence farmers experienced losses from the Primera season, and irregular rainfall during September and October affected the Postrera crops in Honduras and El Salvador. Rainfall irregularities are expected during the next quarter, with average to below average precipitation that could affect the Apante crop cycle in Nicaragua. In Haiti, rainfall has improved crop development in most areas.

An operational system has been developed on the island of Hispaniola to produce and disseminate new early warning information on coastal flooding, which will help save lives and protect property in low-lying, populated coastal areas. There is potential to enhance this early warning platform in the future and to extend it to other Caribbean nations.

The 2017 hurricane season in the Caribbean was unprecedented. High-powered, high impact hurricanes, including Irma and Maria, left a path of destruction, infrastructure damage and casualties in more than a dozen territories in the region. Without forecasts and warnings, the tragic loss of life would have been even higher.

The latest national Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) exercise in Haiti (October-December 2018) shows a significant deterioration of the food security and nutritional situation of rural households in the country. 2.2 million people are facing acute food insecurity, with 386,000 in a food emergency situation. The nutritional situation of children is of particular concern, with global acute malnutrition rates well above the emergency threshold in some areas.
