Overview

During the first nine months of 2018, just under 25,100 refugees were submitted by UNHCR for resettlement' to 19 countries in Europe.2 This is 24% less than the same period in 2017, but already two-thirds more than the average rate of 15,400 submissions per year during the previous 10 years.

BERLIN, 13 November 2018 – An initiative launched by UNICEF and the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, to support refugees in accommodation centres, has made considerable progress towards protecting the rights of vulnerable children.

An estimated half a million refugee children and adolescents have applied for asylum in Germany since 2015. These children and adolescents often stay in accommodation centres for significant periods of time, although the centres do not provide adequate long-term shelter, protection or other basic services.

GENEVA, 6 November, 2018 - The German Government has announced strong support for the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the global plan to reduce disaster losses, including €5 million for implementation over the next three years.

Mr. Norbert Barthle, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), made the announcement during a meeting in Berlin last month with the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction, Ms. Mami Mizutori.

Today the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and the German Ambassador inaugurated the UNRWA Talbieh Elementary and Preparatory Girls’ School after the completion of reconstruction work on the school structure. The ceremony also marked hand-over of rehabilitated shelters to the most vulnerable families in Talbieh refugee camp.

Schoolchildren in UK cities are welcoming refugees and sending aid abroad as part of a European project to improve the lives of people fleeing war.

A pilot programme in Cardiff and Birmingham called Refugee Welcome Schools has proved hugely successful and there are plans to expand it to other British towns and cities.

Introduction

The recent migration crisis has posed severe challenges for Europe, having an enormous impact on all asylum seekers and related policies. Although only one percent of requests submitted so far in the EU countries have been considered admissible, citizens of the Republic of Serbia continue to apply for asylum in big numbers1. What is more, many of the asylum applications are unfounded and their increase threatens to jeopardize the EU visa-free regime for Serbian citizens, which was granted to Serbia in 2009.

- By September 2018, some 89,000 refugees and migrants, almost a quarter of whom children, arrived in Europe through the Mediterranean migration routes. Most children arrived in Greece and Spain.
- Between January and September 2018, nearly 16,700 children benefitted from UNICEF specialized child protection support in Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Germany. With the start of the school year, 13,810 children were also reached with UNICEF-supported formal and non-formal education activities.

UNHCR coordinated the delivery of humanitarian convoys. In total, ten trucks with shelter material reached Donetsk region. The materials will be used for the repair of 110 damaged houses.

UNHCR partners have conducted 643 protection monitoring visits in seven regions. UNHCR focused most of its visits to conflict affected villages located along the ‘Contact Line’ in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is grateful to Malta for its decision to allow 58 rescued people from the NGO ship Aquarius to be disembarked, ending their ordeal after days at sea. We are also grateful to France, Germany, Portugal and Spain who have offered to receive these people from Malta.
