A. Situation analysis

Description of the disaster On 13 October 2018, the migrant caravan began its journey in San Pedro Sula, Honduras with approximately 1,500 people (increasing to an average of 8,500 people within a few days of its initial departure). The caravan, which includes men, women, elderly persons, children and babies, entered through the Agua Caliente customs office in the department of Chiquimula, Guatemala and other access points such as El Amatillo and El Florido.

Operational Updates

  • After the Fuego volcano eruption on 3 June, WFP closely coordinated with the Humanitarian Country Team to respond to the needs of the most affected populations. WFP led a multisector evaluation in affected communities in collaboration with the Government, NGOs, UN agencies and other partners. Key findings on food security, damages, agriculture, food consumption and market prices informed the relief intervention.

Ciudad de Guatemala, 7 ago (AGN).- El Gobierno de Estados Unidos construirá cuatro bodegas que serán utilizadas para apoyo y ayuda humanitaria en casos de emergencia en Guatemala, según un convenio de cooperación entre ambos países, publicado hoy en el diario oficial.

La construcción estará a cargo del Grupo Militar de los Estados Unidos y contará con una inversión de 2,18 millones de dólares.

• An estimate 3,587 people are currently living in official shelters, including approximately 1,400 children.

• Around 16,000 children and adolescents who were out of school for over a month since the volcano eruption, are now back in schools as education activities resumed on 9 July.

The Guatemalan authorities activated the EUCPM on 15 June to request expertise in volcanology, early warning and contingency planning. Following the request for assistance of 15 June, a EUCP Team consisting of eight members, including an ERCC Liaison Officer has been established and has been deployed as of 23 June for duration of 22 days. The team is composed of experts in detection and monitoring of lahars, infrasound monitoring networks, risk management, early warning systems, as well as technical assistance, a team leader and an ERCC Liaison Officer.

  • At least 12,823 people have left their homes as the volcano is still active and the risk of new events remains. An estimated 3,623 people are currently living in official shelters, including approximately 1,400 children.

This Emergency Appeal seeks a total of 2,036,967 Swiss francs to enable the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support the Guatemalan Red Cross (GRC) to deliver humanitarian assistance to 6,000 people for 12 months, with a strong focus on health, livelihoods, disaster risk reduction and institutional capacity development. The planned response reflects the current situation and information available at this time of the evolving operation, and will be adjusted based on further developments and more detailed assessments.

Ciudad de Guatemala, 10 jun (AGN).- Las autoridades de Guatemala mantienen un mecanismo de restricción, registro y control de ingreso de personas y vehículos a la zona del desastre dejado por la potente erupción del volcán de Fuego de hace una semana, en los departamentos de Escuintla y Sacatepéquez, informaron fuentes oficiales.

Al mismo tiempo, instituciones de Gobierno trabajan de manera coordinada para habilitar los pasos de carreteras y caminos afectados por los constantes deslizamientos de material volcánico.

Ciudad de Guatemala, 8 jun (AGN).- El Gobierno de Guatemala exonera del pago de tarifas por servicios aeroportuarios a todos los vuelos que lleguen al país con ayuda para los damnificados por la erupción del volcán de Fuego, informó hoy una fuente gubernamental.

La Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC) dijo en un comunicado que la decisión, que cobró vigencia inmediata, la anunció el director de esa institución, Francis Argueta.

  • Due to the recently increased volcanic activity in Fuego Volcano (central-south Guatemala), a new pyroclastic flow occurred on 7 June in Las Lajas and El Jute Valley. The ash column from the pyroclastic flow could reach up to 6 000 meters and spread toward the west-southwest. The area southeast of the volcano remains at a maximum alert level (red departmental alert) on 8 June, according to CONRED.

Con la firme convicción de ayudar a localizar personas que fueron soterradas por la ceniza, lodo y lava del volcán de fuego, agentes del Centro Antipandillas Transnacional (CAT), hacen uso de equipo de última tecnología, para la búsqueda aérea de personas desaparecidas en San Miguel Los Lotes, La Reina y El Rodeo.

El equipo que utilizan los elementos de CAT es de última tecnología para loscalizar cuerpos de personas soterradas.
