La organización, que trabaja por los derechos de la infancia y la igualdad de las niñas, acaba de construir seis escuelas temporales que serán utilizadas por 600 estudiantes durante todo un año escolar.

The needs of the children, especially girls, affected by the volcanic eruptions in Guatemala must be a top priority for the international community.

To date, at least 99 people have been reported killed by the eruption of the Volcán de Fuego on Sunday – Guatemala’s biggest in more than 40 years. A second eruption on Tuesday disrupted search and rescue missions for the 192 people who have been reported missing, and the death toll continues to rise.

Guatemala City – Having survived a powerful earthquake, hundreds of homeless children in remote indigenous villages in south-west Guatemala are now facing freezing night time temperatures.

Plan Guatemala said that temperatures in these remote areas in the indigenous municipality of San Juan Ostuncalco are dropping as low as zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit).

Many of the people in these difficult-to-reach farming villages are sheltering in churches and schools many of which were damaged and are with without walls to protect against the cold.

9 November 2012: Plan specialist teams are providing emotional first aid to children affected by a powerful earthquake that shook Guatemala's southwest Pacific coast on Wednesday.

The earthquake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter Scale (IX on the Modified Mercalli Scale) has affected 1.2 million people - including 600,000 children, killed more than 50 and damaged over 2,200 homes and 7 schools in the San Marcos, Huehuetenango, Quetzaltenango and Quiché departments, according to early assessments.

22 August 2012: Plan will receive US$1.5 million from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to improve food security and nutrition among indigenous children and women in Guatemala.

Plan has been allocated the largest share of US$7 million committed by IDB to 7 civil society organisations in the Americas region for projects targeted at benefiting vulnerable groups and low income communities. The money has been provided by the Japanese government and is managed by the IDB.

At least 45 people have been killed, and 10,162 have been evacuated from their homes. Thousands more have been affected and are still at risk.

14 June 2010: Plan has launched an emergency appeal to help thousands of Guatemalan children and their families made homeless by tropical storm Agatha.

More than 27,000 people are living in 218 shelters and many more are trapped in their communities by landslides which have damaged roads and bridges.

Guatemala has the highest death toll of any Central American country affected by the storm at 174, and regional forecasts are now saying that this is only the beginning of a long and difficult storm season for the area.

La Avellana shelter looks like Venice these days. The main street is covered in water, and simple wooden canoes are the transportation of choice. The school, set back from the swampy canal which gives access to the sea, is on higher ground, and it is here that 14 families have sought shelter from the fetid waters of Hurricane Stan.

Number of people in refuge 42,941

Number of death 669

Number of people disappeared 844

Number of houses damaged 25,828

Number of houses destroyed 9,136

Number of communities affected 1,156

In general the people are starting to go back home, and the shelters are being closed.
