Mauritania hosts over 2,000 urban refugees and asylumseekers and more than 56,000 Malian refugees in Mbera camp established in 2012 in the arid south-eastern region close to the Malian border.

Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, large-scale returns of Malian refugees are not expected due to persistent violence in northern Mali. In July alone, 19 new arrivals were registered in Mbera camp.

Sahel populations have always been very mobile, but in recent years a complex economic situation and the difficulty of finding jobs has pushed more and more people to seek jobs abroad. Unscrupulous traffickers seize on this desperation by promising men and women well-paid stable jobs away from home.

Nouakchott, 26 July 2018 – Five cities from Mauritania have completed disaster risk resilience assessments and have started drafting people-centred city action plans in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction – the global plan for reducing losses from disasters.

The news came as local government delegates and representatives from across Mauritania came together in efforts to enhance their communities’ human security through localizing disaster risk reduction.

▪ Based on reports received by end of May 2018, 10,650 children with SAM were admitted for treatment throughout the country (33% of the estimated national caseload at 32,244 SAM cases for 2018). 6,139 SAM cases were admitted in the 21 emergency districts (30% of indirect coverage compared to the estimated annual caseload of 20,455 SAM cases).
A national mass screening campaign identified 2,249 children with SAM (MUAC < 115 mm) in June.

As the situation in northern Mali continues to be unstable, Mauritania continues to receive Malian refugees and to support refugees and vulnerable host communities.

Behind her are piled the mattresses and blankets that were to be her dowry, had she not resisted her family’s attempt to forcibly marry her off to a cattle-herding cousin in her native Mali.
