UNHCR protects and assists over 2,000 urban refugees and asylum-seekers in the cities of Nouakchott and Nouadhibou, mostly from Central Africa, Syria and Côte d’Ivoire.

Security in northern Mali is still volatile and largescale returns are not expected. The host area is subject to drought and is under pressure from the increasing refugee population

Unscrupulous traffickers seize on this desperation by promising men and women well-paid stable jobs away from home.

Nouakchott, 26 July 2018 – Five cities from Mauritania have completed disaster risk resilience assessments and have started drafting people-centred city action plans in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction – the global plan for reducing losses from disasters.

The news came as local government delegates and representatives from across Mauritania came together in efforts to enhance their communities’ human security through localizing disaster risk reduction.

▪ Based on reports received by end of May 2018, 10,650 children with SAM were admitted for treatment throughout the country (33% of the estimated national caseload at 32,244 SAM cases for 2018). 6,139 SAM cases were admitted in the 21 emergency districts (30% of indirect coverage compared to the estimated annual caseload of 20,455 SAM cases).
A national mass screening campaign identified 2,249 children with SAM (MUAC < 115 mm) in June.
