On April 16th 2018 the NBK cut its policy rate by 25 points, to 9.25%, following a 25-basis-point cut in March and a 50-point cut in January, citing inflation (6.5% year on year in March) within the target range. The bank also reported that inflation expectations had fallen from 7.1% in December 2017 to 5.8% in March 2018. In the first quarter of 2018 the short-term economic indicator rose by 5.3% year on year, compared with 4.8% a year earlier.

4-5 May 2018 Aktobe - UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan Mr. Norimasa Shimomura and the Head of Cooperation Unit of the Delegation of the European Union (EUD) to Kazakhstan Mr. Johannes Stenbaek have visited the Aktobe region. UNDP and EUD installed an early flood warning system within their joint pilot project called "Supporting Kazakhstan’s transition to a green economy model". The project is being fully financed by the EU to the amount of 7,1 million Euros.

  • Heavy rain and snowfall have been affecting the eastern areas of the country over the past few days, causing floods.
  • As media reported, on 13 March, at least 400 people were evacuated in the district of Ayagoz (East Kazakhstan Region) and over 140 houses were damaged to different degrees in the regional capital Oskemen, as well as in the districts of Ayagoz, Glubokoye, Kurshim, Zaisan, and Urzhar.
  • Over the next 24 hours, localised rain and snowfall could still affect some of the already affected areas.

OSKEMEN, Kazakhstan -- Heavy rains and melting snow have converged to cause massive flooding in eastern Kazakhstan.

Zhadyra Amanghaliqyzy, a spokeswoman for the East Kazakhstan regional Emergency Situations Department, told RFE/RL on March 12 that 110 kindergartens, 150 homes, and about 70 other buildings were damaged by high waters in the regional capital, Oskemen, and in the districts of Ayagoz, Glubokoye, Kurshim, Zaisan, and Urzhar.

Kazakhstan - The Central Asian country of Kazakhstan is seeing a rapid rise in inward migration, and interested parties have been urged to ensure respect for migrants’ rights at an early stage, rather than be faced with an expensive fix further down the line.

The spike in migration into Kazakhstan is largely due to a booming economy fuelled by construction projects, mainly in the oil sector. Unfortunately, migrants are particularly vulnerable to labour and human rights abuses when they arrive in a new country, desperate for work regardless of the conditions.

Areas of northern and central Kazakhstan has been hit by intense floods caused by heavy rainfall and overflowing rivers, forcing thousands to flee their homes.

The crisis began unfolding on April 11 with the outbreak of intense downfalls. Rivers bursting their banks have barred roads in several northern regions of the country, including around the capital, Astana.

Heavy floods have hit regions across northern Kazakhstan, destroying hundreds of buildings, prompting the evacuation of thousands of people, and leading to accusations of a botched state response.

Residents have linked about six deaths to the recent flooding, while authorities in the Central Asian nation say it has caused no casualties.

On April 20, officials in the North Kazakhstan region said the water level in a main reservoir was almost three meters above the allowed maximum, adding to the concerns of residents hit by the flooding that follows snowmelt.

ASTANA, 24 May 2016 – An OSCE-supported regional training seminar for some 50 military officers from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan on the practical implementation of the Vienna Document 2011 and confidence- and security-building measures began today in Astana.

The OSCE Programme Office in Astana organized the four-day event in co-operation with Kazakhstan's Defence Ministry and with the support of the OSCE field operations.
