Press Release #1506-03 Palikir, Pohnpei – FSM Information Services June 25, 2015

Palikir, Pohnpei (Department of Foreign Affairs): On June 23, 2015, Mr. Marciano De Borja, Consul General of the Republic of the Philippines in Guam and also accredited to the FSM on consular matters, paid a courtesy call on the Vice President, T.H. Yosiwo P. George. The purpose of the call was to hand-over a check of $50,000 US Dollars as a monetary assistance from the Government of the Philippines towards the typhoon Maysak recovery efforts in Chuuk and Yap.

Highlights

  • The Caroline Voyager is docked in Yap since April 22, 2015 and re-provisioning. It is scheduled to depart for Ulithi, Fais, and Fareulap on April 25, 2015 to continue its delivery of relief items.

  • Vice President Alik Alik is making his official visit to the State of Yap on April 25, 2015 for a week, scheduled to visit the islands of Ulithi and Fais during his stay.

  • USAID conducted an Airlift of Emergency Relief Supplies to Yap and Chuuk on April 22, 2015.

FSMIS (May 01, 2015): As of today, May 1st, the Federated States of Micronesia Department of Finance and Administration confirms the receipt of the following donations for deposit in the Maysak disaster relief fund.

  1. Government of the People’s Republic of China $500,000.00

  2. Government of the Republic of Palau $75,000.00

  3. The World Health Organization (WHO) $5,000.00

  4. Tuvalu Permanent Mission to UN $500.00

April 13, 2015

On April 11, 2015, the Federated States of Micronesia Eighteenth Congress ended its two-day sixth special session. Among actions taken was an appropriation of $1.5 million towards typhoon relief assistance for the FSM States of Chuuk and Yap, and $100,000 for Vanuatu.

FSM President Manny Mori called the special session of Congress to consider the ongoing emergency situation caused by Super Typhoon Maysak over two weeks ago, resulting in disasters throughout parts of Chuuk and Yap.

  • Patrol boats FSM03 and FSM02 departed for the Chuuk and Yap islands respectively to assess damages and team comprises of OEEM, Resource & Development, TC&I and Health

  • Chuuk and Yap States are conducting assessment with support from the locally based IOM and Micronesia Red Cross Society (MRCS) teams

  • IOM and MRSC are now distributing Non Food Items from their preposition stocks in Chuuk and Yap states

  • Typhoon Maysak made landfall on the Chuuk islands on Sunday 29th March which had caused extensive damages prompting the Governor Johnson Elimo to declare a state of emergency.

  • President Manny Mori consequently declare a state of emergency for Chuuk and avail initial $100,000 to support mobilization of assessment and initial relief efforts.

When I issued the March 30, 2015, Presidential Emergency Declaration, Typhoon Maysak was going through the outer islands of Chuuk and was on its way to the State of Yap.

The State of Yap is now experiencing the devastation brought by Super Typhoon Maysak, and the Governor of Yap has made an oral emergency declaration, which will be followed up in writing as soon as the disrupted communications will allow, in order to deal with the catastrophe and to prevent further damage to lives and property.

March 29' 2015 Typhoon Maysak Declaration of Disaster Emergency for Chuuk State

On March 30, 2015, Governor Johnson Elimo declared a state of emergency due to damage by Typhoon Maysak, including 5 deaths, extensive damage to private and public properties including schools, health facilities, public utilities, private residences, and the sinking of several fishing, passenger and dive ships. Typhoon Maysak is currently a category 2 storm while going through the outer islands of Chuuk and is expected to rise to category 3 tomorrow.
