Overview of Hazard Incidents in May 2018

In May 2018, 6 hazard incidents took place among which 2 were manmade (fire, boat-capsize) and 4 were natural (lightning, heavy rainfall, Landslide and Nor’wester). The frequency of hazards are quite high in number and their impacts took lives of about 127 persons.

• EUCPM prepares and responds to environmental disasters, including incidents that arise as secondary effects of a natural disaster.

• DG ECHO, operating through the EUCPM, is among JEU’s most important partners.

• DG ECHO's collaboration with the JEU has been constantly increasing during the past years, raising at a level of 50% of all JEU missions since 2016.

As of April 2018, 1,881,198 IDPs remain displaced in 272 IDP camps and 2,083 host community locations across Northeast Nigeria (DTM Rd XXII). The main trigger of these large-scale IDP movements are ongoing security operations, poor living conditions and voluntary relocation into sites and host communities, with over 19,000 arrivals and 600 departures recorded in April alone (DTM ETT April 2018). Gwoza received the highest number of arrivals with 3,566 individuals, followed by Bama (2,853 individuals), Ngala (2,360), Damboa (952), Jere (936) and Dikwa (773).

The number of fires in camps for displaced people in Darfur has flared up in the past two weeks, raising concerns for their strength and leaving dozens of families in the open.

On Sunday, the camps in Gireida locality, South Darfur, saw another fire at Babanusa which led to the destruction of 102 homes.

Displaced people in Babanusa camp informed Radio Dabanga that the fire caused burns to 60-year-old Aisha Musa. About 43 homes were partially destroyed.
