  • A cholera epidemics breaks in north-east Nigeria on 16 August 2017 with, as of 13 September, 45 dead amongst 1,925 cases recorded in Borno State.

  • The hepatitis E epidemic declared in April in Niger is marking a decreasing trend, after recording 1,672 cases in the Diffa region.

  • Cameroon’s Far North is witnessing an increase in incidents and attacks as well as a geographical shift in violent incidents from Logone-and-Chari to Mayo Sava department.

Regional Highlights

• 6,700 people from Niger’s south-eastern region flee to Chad prompted by fear of Boko Haram attacks following the withdrawal of Chadian troops.

• Tripartite commission starts work on modalities to implement the agreement on the voluntary return of Nigerian refugees in Cameroon. Around 15,000 Nigerian refugees have returned since April.

• 14 people are killed in an attack against a newly-established camp for displaced people near Dikwa, in Nigeria’s north-eastern Borno state, on 28 July.

Regional Highlights

• Only 28.5 per cent of the funds needed for food assistance programmes in north-east Nigeria has been received, prompting cut-backs and readjustments. The Government launches the distribution of 30,000 tons of cereals.

• Humanitarian actors and the authorities in Nigeria’s Borno state develop a contingency plan to provide life-saving assistance during the current rainy season that carries the risks of flooding, food and nutrition insecurity, epidemics and displacement.

• More than 12,000 refugees return from Cameroon’s Far North region to towns and localities in north-east Nigeria. Poor living conditions and insecurity in the areas of return as well as uncertainty about the causes of the returns have raised concerns among humanitarian organisations.

• Mayo Sava department in Cameroon’s Far North region is hit by nine suicide attacks since April, severely restricting humanitarian access.

  • Humanitarian partners in Nigeria are preparing contingency plans for the possible return of around 75,000 Nigerian refugees from Cameroon. Incidents of forceful returns continue to be reported despite an agreement signed in March by Cameroon, Nigeria and UNHCR on voluntary repatriation. In Banki town, the military recently reported that around 1,000 people arrived every week from neighbouring Cameroon and warned that the small border town was being overwhelmed by the influx.

Regional Highlights

  • More than 50,000 people risk famine in Nigeria’s north-eastern Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states between June and August. Some 5.2 million people are projected to suffer severe food scarcity, a third of them will face “emergency” levels of hunger.

  • Timely and effective agricultural support is required to see families and communities in the region’s conflict-hit areas through the upcoming lean season. Planting is expected to start in May.

• According to the latest Cadre Harmonisé (CH) report released in March, more than 50,000 people could experience famine-like conditions across the three most affected states of the North-East region from June to August;
