Designed by KoboToolbox staff experts, this comprehensive foundational course includes key techniques for designing survey forms with XLForm, including using form logic and calculations, adding translations, and testing and deploying forms for data collection with KoboToolbox.
About the course
In this hands-on self-paced course, you will learn how to build complex survey forms from scratch using XLSForm and deploy them for data collection with KoboToolbox. Upon completion, you’ll receive an official KoboToolbox XLSForm Fundamentals certificate.
The KoboToolbox XLSForm Fundamentals Course is designed by Kobo staff experts to help humanitarian and development organizations develop advanced form building skills for data-informed programming, response coordination, and decision-making. Kobo’s Knowledge Transfer Specialist, Alexander Mtembenuzeni, will lead you through the course.

The course covers a range of XLSForm skills for humanitarian data collection including:
- Building an XLSForm from scratch and adding different question types
- Adding question options and appearances
- Adding groups and repeat groups
- Adding translations and media
- Using relevance logic, validations, and choice filters
- Adding calculations
- Validating, testing, and deploying an XLSForm using KoboToolbox
Who should take this course
The XLSForm Fundamentals Course is designed for humanitarian and development organizations who need to develop advanced or complex survey forms to collect detailed, accurate data for needs assessments, program monitoring and evaluation, and response coordination. The course is ideal for anyone interested in learning how to build forms in XLSForm and then test and deploy them for data collection with KoboToolbox.
Although there are no prerequisites for this course, if you are new to KoboToolbox or form building, we recommend that you start with the KoboToolbox Essentials Course. It provides a comprehensive introduction to form building, data collection, and data management with KoboToolbox.
Course format and materials
The course is entirely online and self-paced, so you can complete it on your own schedule, get real-time results on learning assessments, and receive feedback on your progress.
The course consists of 10 learning modules with video tutorials, quizzes, and hands-on exercises to help you practice and apply what you learn.
Each video is accompanied by written key points and a list of key terms, and each module includes a summary to reinforce important concepts.
Please note that the course is currently only available in English. Closed captions are available for each video.
