Gender, Conflict & Peacebuilding

Course description:

This course will delve into the intersectional relationship between gender, conflict, security, and peacebuilding, catering to policymakers, peacebuilding practitioners, and international development professionals. Participants will explore the influence of gender stereotypes on perceptions of war and peace and examine how gender intersects with identities such as race, class, social class, ability, and nationality to analyse inequalities in conflict and peace contexts. Additionally, they will critically assess the strengths and limitations of the UN Security Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security.

The course will offer gender perspectives on mediation, conflict sensitivity, and the culture of peace, both in physical and digital spaces and within international organizations.

Course objectives:

  • understand the relevance of gender analysis for managing violent conflict and peacebuilding programs;
  • recognize the importance, but also the limitations, of gender mainstreaming in peacebuilding and governance (policy formulation);
  • be invited to expand your understanding of peacebuilding processes to include new, gendered strategies, also in a digital ecosystem;
  • learn how to integrate a gender-sensitive approach into programming;
  • exchange experiences with experts and peers and become part of a community of practice.
