The Course

The course is targeted at professionals working in both the humanitarian and development sector. The course broad aim is to equip the participant with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct and a needs assessment that would lead to an effective response. The course covers both general assessments and sector specific detailed assessments. The skilled gained can be used to conduct a rapid assessment in the event of an emergency, a long-term needs assessment during the recovery phase among other scenarios.

The course is aligned to the Sphere standards for humanitarian response(SPHERE) and the Core Humanitarian Standards(CHS).

Objectives.

By the end of the course the participants should be able to:

· Understand assessment contexts, latest methodologies, terminology, and reporting formats.

· Understand the needs assessment process.

· Be aware of the appropriate levels of data types and detail required to inform decision making at different stages.

· Understand how to use relevant secondary data and plan and undertake appropriate primary data collection.

· Contribute towards a joint analysis of the data collected.

Methodology

The is an online course made up of two components:

  1. Self-study module: where the participants are given access to material that elaborate to read at their own pace. The material provide introduction to basic concepts of the assessment process. They include links to course notes, videos and other online assessment resources.

  2. Instructor Led module: These sessions are conducted through web conferencing and are led by our facilitators. They involve presentations by the facilitator, group discussions, role plays, videos and a virtual simulation exercise. Through the use of a contextualized case study the participants are taken through the different steps in needs assessment from forming an assessment team to delivering an assessment report

  4. Programs and project staff in the humanitarian and development sector. Government officials responsible for developing and delivering projects and others.
