CERT Brasil offers the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT and Teen CERT) courses in Brazil. With an instructor trained at the US Emergency Management Institute and the course material translated into Brazilian Portuguese, courses are offered in-site to schools, residents' associations, Civil Defense volunteer groups and other interested parties.
The CERT program supports Disaster Risk Reduction activities at a community level by training local volunteers to respond to disaster situations within their neighborhoods during the crucial 72 hour post-impact period before outside professional emergency services have arrived. Topics covered in this 24 hour hands-on course include individual and family disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster medical operations, team organization and the incident command system, and disaster psychology.
As a non-governmental organization (NGO) that relies on the participation of volunteer CERT and Teen CERT graduates, CERT Brasil charges a minimum to cover the expenses of running the courses, and often offers the Teen CERT courses for free to public and educational institutions.
