The total number of reported incidents below reflects the willingness of agencies to share information. It is neither a complete count nor representative.

Situation Update

On 9 July, nearly nine months after the launch of military operations to retake Mosul city, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the liberation of Mosul. The announcement, came amid reports of ongoing fighting in pockets of the Old City still under armed extremist groups’ control.

The humanitarian crisis in Yemen is getting ever worse. More than 21 million people in the country are in urgent need of assistance. The Federal Foreign Office has provided €28 million this year to pay for humanitarian aid for those affected.

Foreign Minister Frank‑Walter Steinmeier and Health Minister Hermann Gröhe presented a Lufthansa Airbus converted into rescue transport for Ebola patients at Berlin Tegel airport on 27 November. The “flying isolation unit” is ready for immediate deployment. It is intended to ensure that aid workers who become infected can be flown out to Germany and treated here.

The fight against the Ebola epidemic in West Africa is posing a dramatic challenge for the international community. The German Government is continuously expanding its assistance and support for the countries affected, providing 161.7 million euros to date. In his capacity as Special Representative of the Federal Government, Ambassador Walter Lindner – formerly Regional Director for Africa and Crisis Management Commissioner at the Federal Foreign Office – directs and coordinates all aid measures.

The number of refugees has now reached 1 683 901, with over 550 thousand in Lebanon alone..
