Joint plan of assistance launched to support northern recovery
Colombo / 01 February 2011: To support the people in the north to recover and rebuild their lives the Government of Sri Lanka, jointly with the United Nations and the broad humanitarian community including NGOs, launched a plan of assistance today.
The one-year program called the "Joint Plan for Assistance for Northern Province in 2011" (JPA) identifies priority activities and strategies to be undertaken during 2011.
The government has launched an international appeal requesting immediate and medium term assistance to provide relief to victims of national disaster which killed more than 4,000 and rendered million homeless. Requests have been initially made to friendly countries, UN and other relief agencies.
Widespread devastation and loss of life have been caused mainly in the Eastern and Southern parts of Sri Lanka as a result of a tidal wave (tsunami) which occurred this morning in the Indian Ocean.
