Displaced population in need of immediate assistance

On Sunday 8 October 2001, Hurricane Iris, a category 4 hurricane, struck Belize causing extensive damage in the south of the country where the poorest communities reside.

Hurricane Iris affected Belize during the period October 8-9, 2001. Iris a Category 4 hurricane with winds up to 220 kilometers per hour (140 mph) and heavy rainfall affected the southern coastal and inland villages of Belize.

Areas Affected

The primary areas affected were the districts of Stann Creek and Toledo.

I. OVERALL SITUATION
1.Hurricane Iris, a category four strength hurricane, hit southern Belize on 8 October 2001 at approximately 20:45 local time. The eye of the hurricane passed over some 40 villages located in the two poorest districts in the south of Belize: Toledo and Stann Creek. The hurricane resulted in storm surge related waves of between 13 and 18 feet above normal. Most of the damage caused by Iris was the result of winds that reached up to 145 miles per hour.

The hurricane relief operation is fully underway in all six programme areas: food relief; vector control; well cleaning; health training; water tank construction and latrine rehabilitation. A recent mission by the water and sanitation delegate based in Venezuela was particularly useful as regards implementation of the water and sanitation component. All activities are funded, following a recent confirmation of an ECHO contribution, and constant liaison is ensured with government authorities and external partners.
