China: Typhoons/Floods - Jul 1986
Disaster description
A UNDRP/UNDP representative in Beijing reports that two disasters hit China almost simultaneously. Typhoon Peggy struck the south China coast and a strong tornado hit the east coast. In Shanghai, a powerful tornado, the worst in 30 years, lashed the southeastern suburbs. (UN DHA, 15 Jul 1986)
A UNDRO/UNDP representative provided the following update: 172 dead; 800 injured; over 510,000 people stranded by floods; 55 cities severely hit by rainfall averaging 200 mm and in some places 500-800 mm; and 533,000 hectares of farmland were flooded. 257,000 houses, 1,600 bridges, and 1,600 km of roads were destroyed or seriously damaged. A UNDRO/UNDP representative in Beijing reported that a new typhoon and torrential rains struck the coast in Guangxi Zhuang region, leaving 22 dead, 700 injured, and 100 missing. Numerous dikes were broken, hundreds of villages and over 13,300 hectares of farmlands were flooded. (UN DHA, 25 Jul 1986)
A UNDRO/UNDP representative in Beijing reported heavy floods caused by torrential rains in two northeast provinces of China. Liaoning province: floods killed 30 people, covered 1530 villages, and destroyed 80,000 hectares of crops. More than 250,000 hectares of farmland and thousands of houses were under water. Jilin province: about 2 million people and one million hectares of farmland were reportedly heavily affected by floods. (UN DHA, 6 Aug 1986)
A UNDRO representative reported heavy casualties and property loss caused by Typhoon Vera in Shanghai on Wednesday 27 August 1986. Eight people died, 25 were injured, 500 houses were destroyed, 8 industrial chimneys were blown down, and crops were flooded. (UN DHA, 29 Aug 1986)
