Bangladesh: Floods - Aug 1988

Disaster description

Following heavy rains and floods in the last two weeks of August: 125 people died; 13 million people were affected; 35 districts out of 64, areas of 25,000 sq.km. were affected; 370,000 ha of crop areas were fully and 391,000 ha were partially damaged. (UN DHA, 30 Aug 1988)

The official death toll is now over 500, many due to snakebites, drinking contaminated water, and consuming rotten foodstuffs. (UN DHA, 5 Sep 1988)
