Indonesia: Floods - May 1995
Disaster description
UNDP/DHA Resident Representative in Jakarta reports the occurrence of floods and landslides on 1 May in the province of Northern Sumatra. The occurrence was triggered by heavy continuous rainfall in late April. The floods and landslides have affected the districts of South Tapanuli and Labuhan Batu resulting in 40 people dead, 390 houses damaged or destroyed, three bridges damaged and a number of fields destroyed. The initial floods of 1 May have affected a total of 23 villages which are located in remote areas. The reported casualties are 42 dead and 3 missing. And 5000 people have been evacuated. The local authorities, supported by the armed forces, have provided emergency relief measures. On 7 May flooding also occurred in the province of Bengkulu, Southern Sumatra, and has affected 12 villages. 9 people are reported dead while 18 are missing. 6 bridges were destroyed, 440 houses and 2500 acres of paddy fields are inundated.
