Philippines: Earthquake - Feb 1990

Disaster description

Strong earthquake occurred Thursday 15:16, 8 February (7:16 am, 8 February GMT) in southern Philippines approx. 60 km south of Cebu city or 600 km southeast of Manila. Magnitude measured 6.6 on Richter Scale. Preliminary epicentre located 9.68 degrees north latitude and 124.05 degrees east longitude. Strong aftershock occurred 31 minutes later which registered 6.1 on Richter Scale. (UN DHA, 9 Feb 1990)

Six fatalities were reported and more than 200 were injured in the event. About 46,000 people were displaced by the event and at least 7,000 among them were rendered homeless. Estimated damage to properties is amounting to 154 million pesos. (PHIVOLCS, 8 Feb 1990)
