Fiji: Cyclone Rajah - Dec 1986

Disaster description

Cyclone Rajah hit north Vanua Levu on 29/30 December 1986, moving through Lau group toward Tonga. Considerable damage to crops, roads, bridges, and water/power supply system was reported in Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby islands. (UN DHA, 31 Dec 1986)

The areas most affected were east Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Lau groups. One person was missing at sea and one was injured. About 260,000 persons were reported in affected areas. Forty-one emergency centres with food distribution were opened for over 3,000 evacuees. (UN DHA, 31 Dec 1986)
