
Kyrgyzstan: Landslides - Mar 1994
Disaster description
Landslide of estimated 500.000 cubic metres completely destroyed 15 or more houses and killed at least 50 persons in a small village near Osh in the Usgen region of Kyrgyzstan, 700 kilometres south-west of the capital Bishkek. Transport and communications infrastructure as well as wintery conditions making access to the disaster site difficult. (UN DHA, 11 Mar 1994)
Landslides affecting the Osh and Jalal-Abad regions in the south of the country have so far led to 99 dead, 12,600 homeless/resettled. More than 350 houses destroyed and more than 1,500 damaged. A further 45,000 people are living in areas threatened by possible landslides. (UN DHA, 1 Apr 1994)
During the last months, Kyrgyzstan has been affected by massive landslides and mudflows caused by heavy rains and melting snow. The water level in rivers exceeds the norm 1.5 to 2 times. These disasters have so far led to: 111 dead, 13,200 homeless, 520 houses damaged and 1.650 houses destroyed. A further 45,000 people are living in areas threatened by possible landslides.
