Afghanistan: Landslides - Mar 1995
Disaster description
On 2 April, a WFP/UNICEF field mission accompanied by Badakhshan provincial authorities visited the affected area and reported the following through the OCHA office in Islamabad. On 27 March at 23:00 hrs local time, the village of Qaluqi ziri kotal in Daraim district, 42 kms south-west of Faizabad, was struck by a landslide that killed 313 people and buried 106 houses. 442 people survived. So far 12 bodies have been recovered. Another 37 deaths have been reported due to a second landslide in Daraim. (UN DHA, 4 Apr 1995)
Further to this major landslide on 27 March in Qarluqi zeri kutal village in Darayeem district in Badakhshan province, the following update has been provided to DHA by OCHA Islamabad: On 10 June, an OCHA/UNICEF assessment mission visited the affected village where survivors are re-building their houses in newly selected pieces of land. Out of 102 affected families, 77 have already purchased land, while the remaining 25 are still searching for affordable plots of land. (UN DHA, 30 Jun 1995)
