Disaster description
On 29 September at 22.25 GMT an earthquake measuring 6.4 on Richter scale struck the state of Maharashtra, SW India, near town of Sholapur. Tremors were felt in whole area between Bombay and Hyderabad. (UN DHA, 30 Sep 1993) The official death toll caused by the worst earthquake that hit India for more than fifty years is 10,500, with an equal number of injured. Both expected to rise. 4,500 bodies have been recovered. Regions in state of Maharashtra most affected are town Khilari and city Osmanabad in districts Latur and Osmanabad. Major parts of Khilari and nearby rural villages completely destroyed. Thousands of people are reportedly still trapped. (UN DHA, 1 Oct 1993)
