China: Typhoon No.7 - Aug 1988
Disaster description
A UNDRO/UNDP resident representative reports that a typhoon hit Xiangshan county, whirling through Ninbo, Shaoxin, Hangzhou and Huzhou, and the force of the typhoon decreased and disappeared while crossing Anhui province. The typhoon affected 41 counties. Electrical power, telecommunications, highways and channels were seriously damaged, villagers were trapped, houses toppled over and crops were waterlogged. Most sanitary and civil facilities were damaged. Very high losses were registered in Hainin, Fenghua, and Chengxian as these counties had previously been affected by floods. Reports indicate that: 10.5 million people in a 15,000 sq.km. range were affected; 135,000 people were evacuated; 160 died; 34 were missing; and 1,232 were injured. (UN DHA, 17 Aug 1988)
