Kazakhstan: Heavy Rains/Floods - May 1993

Disaster description

The central Asian nation of Kazakhstan suffered major damage from floods as a result of melting snow caused by the sharp rise in temperature and simultaneous heavy rains. (UN DHA, 27 May 1993)

In the Embinskyi district, three people were killed, 8,000 persons had been made homeless, and 1,270 dwellings had been affected, of which 600 private homes had been completely destroyed, and 18 public buildings had been destroyed. In the Kzylkoginskyi district, 600 homes were damaged of which 200 had been completely destroyed. In the Denizskyi district, an area of 130,000 hectares was flooded, and 130 homes, 120 livestock shelters, and 5 cattle-breeding stations were destroyed. (UN DHA, 4 Jun 1993)
