Indonesia: Earthquake - Dec 1987

Disaster description

On the morning of 26 November 1987, an earthquake (magnitude 5.8 richter) hit south Pantar Island in eastern Indonesia and caused a landslide which cut access/escape routes from villages to the sea. 43 people died, 101 were injured, 75 were missing and 16,000 people in ten villages were affected. 1,126 buildings were damaged, including mosques, schools, government. buildings and village dwellings. 1,350 villagers were evacuated to a nearby island.
