Philippines: Typhoon - Jun 1985
Disaster description
Typhoon 'Kuring' which hit Luzon and surrounding areas, namely Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Benguet, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Zambales, Vigan, Bantay, San Esteban, Laoag, Baguio city, Pampanga, caused deaths and infrastructure damage. The following was reported by the UNDRO resident representative: 11 deaths, over 500 houses were totally destroyed and many were damaged. Over 600 families (3,719 persons) were affected and a total of 194 families (2,901 persons) were homeless. (UN DHA, 26 Jun 1985)
The same regions (Luzon and surrounding areas) were hit by another typhoon, 'Daling' on 30 June 1985. Furthermore, heavy monsoon rains continued to cause flooding and landslides. Over 100 persons are reported as having died and approximately 420,000 persons were affected. Hundreds were made homeless and thousands of homes were partially damaged. (UN DHA, 8 Jul 1985)
