Bangladesh: Rainstorm / Tidal Surge - May 1995
Disaster description
Continuous heavy rainfall since 15 May, coupled with a high tidal surge, severely affected southern parts of Bangladesh, especially Cox's Bazar, Teknaf, Barguna, Bagerhat, and adjoining offshore islands (Manpura, Char Nizam, Hatiya, and Sandwip). (UN DHA, 17 May 1995)
Rainstorms and high tidal surges affected the districts of Bhola, Cox's Bazar, Bagerhat, Hatiya, Noakhali, Patuakhali, and Chittagong (in order of extent of damage). In Cox's Bazar, three people died and 790 were affected in five thanas of Cox's Bazar, Sadar, Chakaria, Moheskhali, Kutubdia, and Teknaf. 375 acres of crops were reported to be destroyed, while 850 acres were partially damaged. In Chittagong, 35,000 people were affected in eight thanas of Sandwip, Anwara, Banshkhali, Mirasarai, Sitakunda, and Patiya, as well as Bandar and Chandgaon of the greater Chittagong municipal area. No deaths or injuries were reported. 40 people were missing. 105 cattle were washed away. 7,810 houses were completely, and 12,315 were partially, destroyed. 7,340 acres of crops were lost.
