Afghanistan/Pakistan Earthquake: Feb 1991

Disaster description

An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the richter scale occurred in the Hindu Kush mountains in the Afghanistan/Pakistan border area at 3:34 hrs local time on 1 February 1991 (23:04 GMT, 31 January), approximately 300 km northeast of Kabul. The epicenter was latitude 36.7 degrees north and longitude 70.9 degrees east. (UN DHA, 1 Feb 1991)

At the request of the government, UNDRO is launching an appeal for international assistance. The most affected locations were along the border with Afghanistan in Chitral and Bajaur. (UN DHA, 5 Feb 1991)

The following data is now available on the effect on human lives and property: 300 dead, 574 injured, 5,983 houses destroyed, 34,951 houses damaged, and 3,732 heads of livestock lost. (UN DHA, 12 Feb 1991)
