Bangladesh: Floods - Jun 1993

Disaster description

Floods which started to affect Bangladesh in early June have worsened due to heavy rainfall, seasonal storms and overflowing rivers. Flash floods and localized landslides have flattened houses, washed away bridges and railway tracks, blocked roads and cut off communication links. Storms with winds up to 43 miles per hour destroyed houses and caused boats to capsize and sink. Northeastern Bangladesh was reported to be the worst hit, including Sylhet, Sunamganj and Hobiganj districts, where tens of thousands of villagers were cut off by flood waters. Other parts of the country were also affected including Cox's Bazar and low-lying suburbs of Dhaka. In the southern port of Chittagong, flash floods engulfed new areas and made an estimated 50,000 people homeless. (UN DHA, 21 Jun 1993)

The damage reported by the Government on 26 June 1993 was as follows: 3,207,056 people were affected; 48,892 houses were fully damaged; 28 people died; and 175 educational institutions were fully damaged. (UN DHA, 29 Jun 1993)
