Indonesia: Earthquake - Mar 1995

Disaster description

Two earthquakes occurred in Irian Jaya, Indonesia, today. First earthquake measuring 5.8 on Richter scale occurred at 3:31 am local time. Epicenter was calculated at 135.18 deg. East, 3.34 deg. South, depth 30 kms. Second earthquake measuring 6.0 occurred at 8:53 am, with epicenter 135.02 deg. East, 4.1 deg. South and depth 46 kms. Earthquakes were felt in towns of Enarotoli and Nabire. Area is remote and sparsely populated. Preliminary reports indicate no major damage. (UN DHA, 20 Mar 1995)

Provincial office of ministry of social affairs in Jayapura has provided initial report on consequences of yesterday's earthquakes in Fakfak district of Irian Jaya. Earthquakes were felt in 5 subdistricts: Mimika Barat, Mimika Timur, Agimuga, Teluk Ebna and Teluk Arguni. Subdistrict of Teluk Ebna reported severe damage to public buildings (health service center, police station and agricultural extension centre). No casualties reported. The office is awaiting damage reports from 4 other subdistricts. Another earthquake measuring 5.7 on Richter scale occurred on Lombok Island later yesterday, at 15:14 local time. Epicenter was calculated at 116.19 deg. East, 7.78 deg. South, depth 219 kms. Earthquake was felt in city of Lombok and also in city of Denpasar on neighboring island of Bali. (UN DHA, 21 Mar 1995)
