Indonesia: East Java Floods - Apr 1994
Disaster description
After prolonged, severe monsoon rains in East Java, Bengawan Solo River overflowed and inundated 5 districts (Ngawi, Tuban, Bojonegoro, Gresik and Lamongan) starting late March. Floods now receding, however rains continuing. UN/DHA Resident Coordinator reports that heavy rains/flooding not unusual in monsoon season, but current floods are worst so far experienced. Following damage reported in the 5 districts: 33 people dead, 1,568 houses totally destroyed and 11,174 partially damaged, 30,210 acres paddy fields inundated and crops lost, 32,486 acres fish ponds destroyed, 266 schools and 236 mosques/churches damaged. 187,131 people affected.
