Afghanistan: Earthquake - Feb 1991
Disaster description
An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale occurred in the Hindu Kush mountains in the Afghanistan/Pakistan border area at 3:34 hrs local time on 1 February 1991 (23:04 GMT, 31 January), approximately 300 km northeast of Kabul. (UN DHA, 1 February 1991)
The UNDRO/UNDP resident representative reports that a severe earthquake that struck on the morning of 1 February was felt in some 18 provinces (including Kabul, Logar, Wardak, Pardan, Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar, Paktia, Khost, Ghazni, Balkh, Jauzjan, Saripul, Faryab, Fadakshan). The revised official figures for casualties and affected are 130 persons killed (19 previously reported) and 1,440 families affected (unchanged) for the provinces of Badakhshan (most affected), Baglan, Laghman and Nangarhar. (UN DHA, 14 February 1991)
