Bangladesh: Floods - Jul 1993
Disaster description
Of a total of 30 districts that were hit by floods in Bangladesh, the worst-affected areas were the northeastern districts of Meghna River Basin and the southeastern region of the southeastern hill basin. In terms of the affected population, the worst-hit districts were Sylhet, Brahmanbaria, Hobiganj, Moulvi Bazar, Sunamganj, Cox's Bazar, Feni, Comilla, Pabna and Sirajganj. (UN DHA, 27 Jul 1993)
The latest damage report from the Disaster Management Bureau of Ministry of Relief (published on 2 August) indicated the following: 162 confirmed deaths; 10,373,217 persons affected (approx. 20 percent of total population in affected districts); 693,082 houses damaged; 29,484 livestock killed; 958,766 acres crops damaged; 14,359 km roads damaged; and 2,664 educational institutions damaged.
