China: Floods and Landslides - Jul 1989

Disaster description

Heavy rains poured on Sichuan province from 7 to 10 July. The maximum rainfall recorded was 500 mm in Wushen county. Floods and landslides occurred in several areas. Chongqing city in Sichuan was the most seriously affected. In Huaying city of Sichuan province, a landslide with 1 million cubic meters at 1,000 meter long and 600 meter high engulfed 2 villages and 6 working units. (UN DHA, 27 July 1989)

The latest data is as follows: 2,000 people died; more than 10,000 were injured; and 100 million were affected (of which 60 million seriously); 1.2 million houses collapsed and 2.78 million were damaged; and more than 8.5 million ha of farmland was damaged. (UN DHA, 6 Sep 1989)
