Bangladesh: Storms - Apr 1995
Disaster description
Weekend storms affected the district of Chittagong, the district of Madaripur, and mostly the district of Munshiganj near Dhakar. In Munshiganj alone, 50 people were killed in several villages near Dhakar, out of a total of 69 reported cases. The death toll might exceed 100 since the rescue teams were unable to reach affected areas due to a general strike in the country. In addition, 1500 persons were injured, 3500 houses were damaged, and power supplies and telephone lines were interrupted. In Madaripur, south of Dhaka, another storm killed 9 people and injured more than 100 people. At the coastal area of Cox's Bazar and in Chittagong 10 were killed too. (UN DHA, 12 April 1995)
