Philippines: Typhoons - Sep 1984
Disaster description
Typhoon Maring hit the Philippines on 27 August and was followed by Typhoon Nitang on 1 September. Typhoon Nitang (codename Ike) caused extensive damage over central and southern provinces. The typhoon with gusts of 275 kph (170 mph) at its peak was reported to be the most powerful since 1970. Initial reports transmitted by the UNDRO/UNDP resident co-ordinator indicated that Cebu province was the hardest hit. Provinces Surigao Del Norte and Misamis Oriental in Mindanao were also severely affected. (UN DHA, 3 Sep 1984)
The final report of casualties and damage from typhoon Maring from the UNDRO/UNDP resident coordinator provided the following statistics: 121 confirmed dead; 26 injured; 17 missing; 475,899 persons (92,271 families) were affected; 7,745 persons (1,310 families) were rendered homeless; and 673 houses were totally destroyed. According to the final report on casualties and damage from Typhoon Nitang from the UNDRO/UNDP resident co-ordinator: 939 people died; 2,565 were injured; 460 were missing; 1,237,224 persons (203,588 families) were affected; 547,076 persons (91,179 families) were rendered homeless; and 82,140 houses were totally destroyed.
