Disaster description

A UNDRO resident representative reports a flood disaster in Liaoning province. 200 people were killed, 100 were missing, and more than 1 million hectares of farmland were submerged. More than 10,000 troops were watching day and night on the banks of the Liaohe and emergency measures were taken to contain water in four reservoirs on the upper reaches of the Liaohe River. Most of those whose houses were flooded were evacuated to safe places. (UN DHA, 30 Aug 1985)
