Typhoon Betty - Aug 1987

Disaster description

On 13 August, Typhoon Betty slammed into the Philippines causing heavy damage and casualties in several regions: Batangas, Laguna, Bicol, Mindoro, Cavite, and Luzon. The latest information provided by the UNDRO/UNDP representative was: nine dead; two injured; six people missing, more than 3,000 families affected; more than 600 persons homeless; 343 houses totally destroyed; and 407 houses damaged. The UNDRP Resrep reported that on 16 August 1987 Typhoon Betty struck the provinces of Binh Tri Thien and Nghe Tinh causing loss of lives, damage to infrastructure, and agriculture. The following are estimated figures regarding the total overall damage: nine dead; 241 injured; 14,583 houses collapsed; and 165,505 without roofs. (UN DHA, 2 Sep 1987)
