KHARTOUM - As the world prepares for the year 2000, many Sudanese victims of this year's floods would be among those welcoming the new year in pain. For them, the beginning of the year would not be a good reason for happiness, for it would be the extension of 1999, a year of floods and agonies in the Sudan.

The floods affected millions of Sudan's population this year and have imposed a pessimism that overshadows the thinking of the victims.

Khartoum (dpa) - Inhabitants of Kadugli town in the Nuba mountain region are preparing to move to the Sudanese capital Khartoum and Wad Medani, the second-largest town in Sudan, to escape starvation, the Alwan daily reported Monday.

The newspaper quoted a local government spokesman, Ismail Ali Saad-Eddin, as saying that he had been warned by an international humanitarian agency, Care International, about the grave food and water situation in Kadugli.

He said Care International was planning to airlift relief supplies to the region with effect from November 1.
