Disaster description
Tropical Cyclone Martin hit Vanua Levu and other islands in the northern division during the night on 12/13 April 1986 and passed over central island groups of Tonga during the night on 13/14 April. Winds were over 65 knots and gusts were up to 90 knots with heavy rains. The central division, especially the Suva area, were hard hit by floods and landslides. Rewa river was over 5m above normal. Many roads were washed out or under water and several bridges collapsed. 5,600 persons were reported to be lodged in 42 evacuation centres, and were receiving clothes and rations from EMSEC.(UN DHA, 22 Apr 1986)
