Disaster description

At 8 p.m. local time on 4 July, a major earthquake (6.7 Richter scale) occurred 110 km east of Kalabari (capital of Alors district) between Alor and Timor islands. Epicenter calculated at depth of 33.3 km at 8 degrees south latitude and 125.38 degrees east longitude. Casualties: 23 dead, 181 injured. Damage: 1,115 buildings including; Govt bldgs: 57 totally, 3 severely, 8 partially; community bldgs: 956 totally, 10 severely, 48 partially; churches: 22 totally, 3 severely, 2 partially; mosques: 3 totally, 1 severely, 1 partially. Economic loss: equivalent to USD 5,128,200. (UN DHA, 8 Jul 1991)
