Bangladesh: Floods - Aug 1989

Disaster description

Following excessive rainfall in neighboring countries, flash floods occurred in the Sylhet district. The affected Upazilas are Zakiganj, Kanaighat, Bianibazar, and Golapgang. The most affected was Zakiganj where a break in the embankment caused a rush of water from the Kushiara river. 200,000 people in the above-mentioned Upazilas were affected. There were also reportedly flash floods in Bandarban district, and a tidal surge in Cox's Bazar and Chittagong districts. (UN DHA, 14 Aug 1989)
