Disaster description
At 1607 hours, on 20 October 1990, an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the richter scale struck Tian Zhu, Jing Tai, and Gu Lang countries in Gansu province. By 7 hours, 21 October, 105 aftershocks had occurred, 6 of which registered greater than 3 on the richter scale, the strongest registered 5.1. (UN DHA, 25 Oct 1990)
According to statistics, by the evening of October 22, the disaster caused the collapse of 15,431 rooms and damaged 20,014. 18,139 farm animal sheds and over 40,000 meters of enclosing walls collapsed.
