Solomon Islands: Cyclone Namu - May 1986

Disaster description

A UNDRO/UNDP Resident Coordinator reported on the situation following the passage of Cyclone Namu over Solomon Islands on 18 May 1986. The cyclone, which was the worst in five years, struck with wind force between 90 and 120 knots. Widespread flooding and wind damage occurred, particularly in Guadalcanal, Malaita, Makira, Rennel and Bellona. Malaita, the country's most populous island, with 65,000 inhabitants was the worst affected. (UN DHA, 21 May 1986)
