Afghanistan: Floods - Jun 1991

Disaster description

Flooding affected the northern province of Jawzjan, bordering the USSR at the end of May. Initial UN assessments indicate no loss of life. An estimated 1,000 homeless persons are in the worst affected villages of Arabjar, Chakush, Jabash Khurt, Lab-e-jar, Qurda Ariq, Sultuq Khort, Aqcha and Qara Boyen. The government estimates that 6,000 houses are flooded from its aerial survey. The UN is also investigating floods in the central province of Bamyan. However, as the whole area is not under government control and there is no UN presence, no reliable information is currently available. (UN DHA, 11 June 1991)
