Disaster description
Following monsoon rains, heavy flooding is reported in Central and West Java. […] The death toll stands at 18 persons and 120,000 people have been evacuated. More than 10,000 houses have been destroyed or seriously affected and severe damage caused to several bridges and some 35,000 hectares of rice fields. (UN DHA, 2 Feb 1993)
Floods affected most of northern coast of Java, from Indramayu District, West Java, to Gresik District, East Java. In Central Java, 89,247 houses were inundated and 1,045 destroyed, causing evacuation of 259,553 people. Over 45,000 acres paddy fields inundated. A damaged bridge in Kendal, Central Java, and inundation of most national/provincial roads along northern coast of java have seriously disrupted transportation. Death toll has risen to 54, and 5 people still reported missing. At this stage, authorities estimate losses from floods at approx. USD 19,300,970, with damage inflicted mainly to infrastructure. Floods started subsiding on 4 February. (UN DHA, 5 Feb 1993)
