Nepal: Land Slides - Jun 1995

Disaster description

According to DHA/UNDP Resident Representative, over the last two weeks torrential rains caused landslides and flash floods in several villages of Nepal, namely Baglung (western region), Lamjung (western region) and Solukhumbu (eastern region), killing 17 people. The most recent landslide in the Kotang area (eastern region) destroyed a considerable number of houses and killed an additional 52 people. A suspension bridge was destroyed, causing the isolation of several affected villages. (UN DHA, 20 Jun 1995)

UNDP/DHA Resident Representative reports that the government mission, led by the minister of home, that went to the affected districts has presented a damage assessment report covering the period from 10 to 21 June 1995. The most affected area is the Kotang district with 58 people dead, 8 injured, 47 houses, 1 school and 1 bridge destroyed. […] The government is not making a request for international assistance at this time. (UN DHA, -0 Jun 1995)
