SITUATION

1. DUE TO CONTINUOUS HEAVY RAINFALL FOLLOWING TROPICAL STORM BRET, MOSQUITIA REGION IN NORTHEAST HONDURAS IS SUFFERING FROM SEVERE FLOODING.

2. MOSQUITIA REGION COVERS 20,300 KM2, INCLUDING CONTINENTAL LAND, EXTENSIVE LAGOON SYSTEMS AND CANALS. TOTAL POPULATION IS APPROXIMATELY 52,000. LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE (ROADS, TELECOMMUNICATIONS, PUBLIC HEALTH, WATER SANITATION, HOUSING AND EDUCATION FACILITIES) IS POOREST IN THE COUNTRY.
